Tony Scott's thriller, adapted from Jim Harrison's novella. Michael "Jay" Cochran, a United States Navy fighter pilot who has just flown his last mission, accepts an open invitation to the Mexican estate of his friend Tiburon Mendez, a landowner whose wealth comes with a reputation, and begins an affair with Mendez's much younger wife. The discovery brings retribution savage enough to set the remainder of the film on one course. Kevin Costner stars with Madeleine Stowe and Anthony Quinn. (IMDb)

Rolex Submariner Date

Worn by Kevin Costner as Michael J. "Jay" Cochran. Montres de Luxe records that Cochran's leaving gifts from the Navy include an immediately recognisable green box, and that the steel Rolex Submariner Date inside it stays on his wrist for the rest of the film. The note settles the line and the date function but not the reference, which is worth knowing rather than glossing: a Submariner Date given away in 1990 falls in the middle of the family's move from acrylic crystals and aluminium bezels to the sapphire references of the late 1980s. A dive watch is the obvious present for a naval aviator, and the film keeps it in shot long after the ceremony that produced it, so it survives into a story that has nothing to do with the Navy.
