Sea Fog

Shim Sung-bo directs this South Korean thriller (Korean: 해무, "Sea Fog") in his feature debut, seventeen years after co-writing Bong Joon-ho's Memories of Murder; Bong co-wrote the screenplay here and produced. The film adapts Kim Min-jung's 2007 stage play of the same name, itself drawn from a real 2001 incident in which 25 Chinese illegal immigrants suffocated in the storage tank of a Korean fishing vessel. Kim Yoon-seok plays Captain Kang Chul-joo, whose aging trawler Jeonjinho faces losing its fishing rights; to save the boat, he agrees to smuggle a group of Chinese migrants across the sea, a commission that curdles into disaster once a coast guard patrol and a fatal accident force the crew to hide their human cargo below decks. Lee Hee-joon plays crewman Chang-wook, alongside Park Yoo-chun as young deckhand Dong-sik, Han Ye-ri as stowaway Hong-mae, Moon Sung-keun as chief engineer Wan-ho, and Kim Sang-ho as boatswain Ho-young. Rolex (fake)

Worn by Kim Yoon-seok as Kang Chul-joo. Timeforum specialist Torino's 2014 Q3 "매체속의 시계들" (Watches in Media) roundup, the same installment that names a Breitling Navitimer in Miss Granny, captions a screen capture from Sea Fog, "starring Kim Yoon-seok," as belonging to the film's own counterfeit-goods subplot: "김윤석씨 주연으로 관심있게 봤던 '해무'의 한 장면입니다. 영화속 짝퉁이야기인데 역시 짝퉁은 로렉스 금딱지죠.." (a scene from Sea Fog, which I watched with interest since it stars Kim Yoon-seok; it's a fake-goods story in the film, and sure enough, the fake is a gold Rolex). Torino states the counterfeit plainly, with no hedge, but names no specific Rolex line: "금딱지" is a Korean colloquialism describing a gold case generically, not a reference to the Daytona, Datejust, or Day-Date by name. The captioned frame shows a gold-cased, fluted-bezel, President-bracelet watch clasped on a crew member's wrist during the smuggling voyage; the watch is diegetically established as a counterfeit within the film's plot, not a real Rolex, so the appearance targets Rolex (fake) rather than any genuine Rolex model.
