Steven Soderbergh's fourth-wall-breaking account of the Panama Papers for Netflix, adapted from Jake Bernstein's Secrecy World. It is built from interlocking stories of people harmed by offshore shell companies and narrated by the Panamanian law-firm partners at its centre, who step out of the drama to explain each mechanism as it is used. Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas play the two lawyers, with Meryl Streep as a widow whose denied insurance claim leads her to Panama, and Jeffrey Wright, David Schwimmer and Sharon Stone. (IMDb)
Watches
- Patek Philippe Calatrava
- Worn by Antonio Banderas as Ramon Fonseca. Fonseca's Calatrava is white gold, and it surfaces only briefly, in one of the closing scenes. Patek's round dress watch has run since the 1932 reference 96 and is the plainest thing the firm makes, which is the point for a partner whose business is selling discretion to people who already have everything else. The column recording the sighting also volunteers, without attribution or supporting detail, that the piece looks to it like a fake. That is an aside about the prop rather than a hedge on the make of watch depicted, no other source discusses it, and nothing establishes the screen watch as a counterfeit.
