Max Landis's comic science-fiction detective series, loosely built on Douglas Adams's novels and shot in Vancouver, ran two seasons on BBC America from October 2016 to December 2017, pairing Samuel Barnett's Dirk, a detective who follows the interconnectedness of all things, with reluctant assistant Todd Brotzman (Elijah Wood), a bellhop whose sister Amanda (Hannah Marks) is the one person he cannot lie to; Jade Eshete and Fiona Dourif co-star, and Netflix carried it outside the United States. Heritage Auctions' Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency: The Auction (Profiles in History, March 2020) sold Todd's watch twice over, each time beside a pair of his sunglasses. Lot 1077 pairs "(1) Timex Expedition wristwatch with brown leather and ribbed fabric band" with the gunmetal Scin Toric sunglasses he wears "during his first meeting with Sheriff Hobbs, who remarks on how cool he looks"; lot 1080 pairs an identically described Expedition with the gold police aviators he wears "when kitted out in Bergsberg County Sheriff gear", both from the second season's Montana storyline. A field watch on a two-piece leather-and-webbing strap is the Expedition's stock form and suits a character who spends the season deputised in a small-town sheriff's office; the essays name the line only, and neither gives a reference.
