A Benrus watch is a watch from the Benrus Watch Company, founded in New York in 1921 by the Romanian-born Benjamin Lazrus and his brothers, first as a repair shop and then as a maker of watches built on Swiss movements. Its field and diver's watches were worn by U.S. forces from the Second World War through Korea and Vietnam. (Wikipedia) Its civilian watches of the same decades, such as the Benrus 3061 that sold for around fifty dollars, cost a fraction of the Swiss sports watches of the day, and watch production wound down by the late 1970s. That plain mid-century Benrus is the kind Steve Sohmer gives the aging FBI agent Joe Mancuso in Favorite Son, its crystal so scratched that he can barely read the hands.
