The Grand Seiko Godzilla 65th Anniversary SBGA405 is an official product partnership with Toho's Godzilla (Gojira), announced October 2, 2019 and released that November in a numbered edition of 650 pieces at $12,500 (about €12,700 in Europe); the watch does not appear in the film. The 44.5 mm × 14.3 mm hardened-titanium case, with curved lugs alternating Zaratsu-polished and brushed surfaces, carries a sunray crimson dial whose radiating facets stand in for Godzilla's heat-ray breath, a black-and-red sharkskin strap textured to suggest the monster's hide on a three-fold push-button clasp, and the Spring Drive calibre 9R15 (72-hour reserve, ±0.5 second/day accuracy, magnetic resistance to 4,800 A/m, 18-karat gold Seiko-lion rotor) behind an exhibition caseback engraved with Godzilla destroying the clock tower atop Ginza's Wako department store, the set piece the 1954 film built its most famous shot around. Wako has been a Seiko retail landmark since the 1930s, and the caseback engraving was designed by Shinji Higuchi, special-effects director of Shin Godzilla (2016). The release doubled as a tribute to Spring Drive itself, marking the technology's 20th anniversary since its 1999 commercial debut. (Grand Seiko, Forbes, Monochrome)
