The Hamilton Pacer launched Hamilton's Electric line in November 1957 as the world's first electric wristwatch, a battery-driven design the Lancaster, Pennsylvania company had spent roughly a decade developing to replace the mainspring with an electromagnetic balance. (Jeweled Legacy) The caliber 500 movement uses a small battery and electromagnetic coil to keep the balance wheel oscillating in place of a wound mainspring, housed in a 10K gold-filled case with an asymmetric lug shape distinctive to the line. Hamilton priced it at $125 on a metal band or $110 on leather, and it was the only Electric-line model to stay in the catalogue across the full 1957-to-1969 run of Hamilton's electric watches, with more than 39,000 sold.
