A Hampden watch is a pocket watch from the Hampden Watch Company, an American maker in business from 1877 that the Dueber Watch Case Company bought in 1888 and moved to Canton, Ohio. The business closed in 1927 and its machinery went to Soviet Russia in 1930. (Wikipedia) Its railroad-grade watches are the ones the novels name: the Special Railway Model that Cassie McGill's father gives him in Brown Meggs's The War Train, and the silent gold watch signed Hampden Watch Company that Melanie Prescott is led to as a clue in Julie Kenner's The Givenchy Code.
