The Hanhart 417 succeeded the wartime Calibre 40/41 pilot chronographs as Hanhart's chronograph for the newly reformed West German Bundeswehr from the mid-1950s, keeping the flyback two-pusher layout, oversized fluted bezel, and red-tipped reset pusher of its Luftwaffe-era predecessors. Hanhart cased the model in both chrome-plated brass and, in a run collectors estimate at roughly 500 pieces, solid stainless steel marked "ES" for Edelstahl (steel); that steel execution is the one Steve McQueen owned personally; a black two-register dial on a leather strap, documented in period photographs including John Dominis's 1963 LIFE magazine shoot at McQueen's Palm Springs home and at motorcycle events such as the International Six Days Trial. (Silodrome) Hanhart discontinued the line in 1963 to concentrate on stopwatch manufacturing and revived it as the modern 417 ES in the 2020s.
