Hanhart opened as a Swiss watch shop in Diessenhofen in 1882, moved to Schwenningen in 1902, and made its name with Europe's first affordable mechanical stopwatch in 1924. The 1938 Calibre 40 and 1939 flyback Calibre 41 pilot chronographs (many wearing a red-lacquered pusher guarding against an accidental reset) equipped wartime Luftwaffe crews and still define the brand, now building chronographs in Gütenbach in the Black Forest.
