Hermès Cape Cod
More actions
The Hermès Cape Cod is the watch Henri d'Origny drew for the house in 1991, and its design is a single idea executed precisely: a rectangular dial set inside a squared case whose corners are pulled out into short lugs, so the piece reads as a rectangle drawn inside a square. D'Origny took the geometry from the Chaîne d'Ancre link, the anchor-chain motif Hermès had used in leather goods and jewellery since the 1930s. (Hermès)
What made it a signature was a strap rather than a movement. In 1998 Martin Margiela, then designing Hermès womenswear, wrapped the leather twice around the wrist for a show; the double-tour became a catalogue option and then the way most people picture the watch. The line runs in small and large cases, in steel and gold, with quartz and automatic movements, so a screen sighting normally supports the line rather than a reference.
