The Rolex Daytona 6241 "John Player Special" is a manual-wind chronograph from the second generation of Cosmograph Daytonas, produced from roughly 1968 to 1970 and powered by Rolex's calibre 722-1. The reference was cased in yellow gold far more rarely than its steel counterparts, and the black "exotic" Paul Newman dial paired with cream sub-registers on a gold case earned the nickname "John Player Special," after the black-and-gold livery of the cigarette-sponsored Lotus Formula One team. Fewer than 400 examples of the gold 6241 are estimated to survive, making it one of the rarest and most valuable vintage Daytona variants at auction. (Bob's Watches)
