The Rolex Oysterquartz Datejust 17000 is the all-steel execution of the watch Rolex built after walking away from the shared Beta 21 consortium movement: five years of development produced the in-house calibre 5035, a temperature-adjusted, chronometer-certified quartz movement more accurate than any mechanical calibre Rolex then made. Its 36 mm case broke as sharply with tradition, angular flanks and an integrated flat-link bracelet in the 1970s idiom; the smooth steel bezel separates the 17000 from the fluted two-tone 17013 and white-gold-bezel 17014. Rolex kept it in production from 1977 to around 2001 yet built an estimated 20,000 to 25,000, leaving a rarity its maker never revisited. (Fratello; Goldammer) On screen it belongs to Jeremy Strong's Vinny Daniel in The Big Short.
