The Big Short (2015)

From IMWDb
The Big Short

The Big Short is a satirical drama about investors who foresee and profit from the United States housing-market collapse. (IMDb) Adam McKay directed and co-wrote the film with Charles Randolph, adapting Michael Lewis's 2010 book The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine for a wide United States release on 23 December 2015. Christian Bale plays hedge-fund manager Michael Burry, with Steve Carell as Mark Baum, Ryan Gosling as bond salesman Jared Vennett and Brad Pitt as retired trader Ben Rickert; McKay and Randolph won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay from five nominations. IWC Portugieser Chronograph
Worn by Ryan Gosling as Jared Vennett. Vennett's dress watch through his direct-to-camera narration and pitch scenes (shown here in a production publicity still) is a black-dial IWC Portugieser Chronograph on a black strap, a fitting pick for a Deutsche Bank trader modeled on Greg Lippmann: legible to the money in the room without announcing itself. The 2015 shoot puts the watch in the 40.9 mm ref. 3714 generation with IWC's Valjoux-based calibre 79350; the ref. IW371609 named in spotting coverage belongs to the in-house 3716 line IWC introduced in 2020 and cannot be the production watch, and the frames leave the exact black-dial 3714 sub-reference unresolved. Casio G-Shock GW-2310-1
Worn by Ryan Gosling as Jared Vennett. At the gym, taking Vinny Daniel's call confirming the first $50 million of Garibaldi mortgage-bond shorts, Vennett swaps the IWC for a black digital G-Shock. The frame favours Casio's 2300-series case (a bright round metal inner bezel inside the resin shell), and WatchReel names the solar, radio-synced GW-2310-1, a probable rather than confirmed reading: the display detail separating it from the visually near-identical, non-radio G-2310 of 2001 stays out of focus, other spotters read the same wrist as the all-resin G-2900, and a GW-2310-1 would postdate the scene's mid-2000s setting the way Baum's Submariner postdates his. Rolex Oysterquartz Datejust 17000
Worn by Jeremy Strong as Vinny Daniel. Baum's analyst Vinny Daniel works most of his scenes on a phone, and the flat brick-like links of a steel integrated-bracelet Rolex Oysterquartz Datejust read clearly on his wrist as he does: Rolex's angular, temperature-adjusted quartz outlier of 1977, built in an estimated run of under 25,000 across a quarter century. The all-steel execution and the spotting record favour the smooth-bezel ref. 17000, a probable reading at reference level: glare blows out the dial in the clearest frames, so the bezel detail that would exclude the white-gold-fluted 17014 goes unseen.
