The Rolex Submariner 1680/8 is the solid 18k yellow gold execution of the first Submariner to carry a date, produced alongside the steel 1680 from 1969 to 1979. It shares the steel model's 40 mm Oyster case and automatic calibre 1575, but in gold the black dial's raised gilt hour markers pick up more light, the detail that earns these examples the collector nickname "nipple dial." The example pictured, plain-dialled rather than retailer-signed, was owned by underwater cinematographer Al Giddings and screen-worn by Bill Paxton as treasure hunter Brock Lovett in Titanic (1997).
