Seiko launched its self-winding quartz technology in 1988 as "Auto Quartz," renaming it Kinetic in 1991 to market it more broadly. An oscillating rotor spins with the wearer's arm movement and charges a capacitor that powers the watch's quartz movement, giving the accuracy of quartz timekeeping without a disposable battery.
