The Seiko King Seiko J14102E is the first King Seiko reference, produced by Seiko's Daini factory from June 1961 to September 1963 as its answer to the rival Suwa factory's new Grand Seiko line, the opening shot in an internal rivalry that pushed both workshops toward precision watchmaking Seiko had not previously attempted. Its hand-wound 25-jewel movement was never assigned a caliber number, individual examples instead carrying their own serial, and inherited its architecture from the Cronos movement that preceded it. Early production used a gold-plated case with solid gold hands and elongated, rounded lugs; a stainless steel case followed in June 1962, some of those examples fitted with a rarer "Special Dial" carrying solid white gold hands and indices, made in far smaller numbers than the standard gold-marker dial.
