Unidentified Tom Peterson promotional watch
More actions
A Hong Kong-manufactured novelty promotional wristwatch distributed by Tom Peterson, a Portland, Oregon electronics and furniture retailer whose self-starring television commercials made him a regional celebrity. (Wikipedia) The black dial carries a caricature portrait in place of any manufacturer's name, with only a generic "Japan Movt" marking on the movement. Heritage Auctions, offering the piece in 2008 and again in 2009 with a notarized letter from Babes in Toyland singer Kat Bjelland, documents it as the only watch Kurt Cobain wore, present in the 1993 MTV Unplugged in New York taping and Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box" video. Bjelland received it from Courtney Love days after Cobain's April 1994 funeral; she says it stopped running a week later. (Heritage Auctions)
