Blancpain launched the Fifty Fathoms in 1953 with French combat-diving officers Robert Maloubier and Claude Riffaud, establishing the modern dive-watch formula of a rotating timing bezel, high-contrast luminous markers, and substantial water resistance. "Aqua Lung" marked watches distributed through the French diving-equipment maker; the first known co-signed example appeared on a US Divers catalog cover in 1958. (Phillips) From the mid-1960s, concern over radioactive luminous paint led watchmakers to add a "No Radiations" mark with a tritium-safety rating such as "T <25 MC"; that marking, not a reference number, dates this vintage execution.
