Blancpain launched the Fifty Fathoms in 1953 with French combat-diving officers Robert Maloubier and Claude Riffaud, and it became one of the watches that established the modern dive-watch formula: a rotating timing bezel, high-contrast luminous markers, and water resistance well beyond any diver's actual use. Blancpain distributed the watch through regional partners under co-branded dials; "Aqua Lung" marked examples sold in connection with the French diving-equipment maker of that name, tied to the Fifty Fathoms' French military-contract lineage. From the mid-1960s on, concern over radioactive luminous paint led watchmakers to add a "No Radiations" mark with a tritium-safety rating such as "T <25 MC"; that marking, not a reference number, is what dates this vintage execution.
