Alan Rickman (1946–2016) was an English actor who trained in theatre before his film debut as the arch-villain Hans Gruber in Die Hard (1988), a role whose cultured menace made him a defining screen antagonist. He went on to play the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Severus Snape across the Harry Potter films, and Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility. (Wikipedia)
