Burt Lancaster (1913-1994) was an American actor who came to Hollywood from the circus, where he had worked as an acrobat, and whose physical control shows from From Here to Eternity to The Swimmer. He won the Academy Award for Elmer Gantry, played the Prince of Salina in Visconti's The Leopard, and appeared as the veteran intelligence officer Cross in Michael Winner's Scorpio.
