Tom Skerritt is an American actor born in Detroit in 1933 who spent his first decade on screen in television series such as Combat! and Gunsmoke after a 1962 film debut in War Hunt. He broke through as Captain Augustus Bedford Forrest in Robert Altman's M*A*S*H, later played Nostromo captain Arthur Dallas in Alien and Commander Mike "Viper" Metcalf in Top Gun, and won a Primetime Emmy for Picket Fences in 1993.
