Watches
- Omega Speedmaster Professional
- Worn by Kevin Bacon as Jack Swigert. Jack Swigert reads the Moonwatch to time the mission's critical 14-second manual burn while Jim Lovell flies the correction, as Swigert did in reality. Hodinkee notes the film shows Swigert timing the burn on a Speedmaster although photographs suggest the real Swigert wore a Rolex GMT-Master daily; Jim Lovell told Hodinkee it was the Speedmaster. (Hodinkee) Fratello's Speedmaster survey names Bacon's Swigert among the three crewmen wearing the Speedmaster Professional, and its founder Robert-Jan Broer told GQ that "Tom Hanks and Kevin Bacon wore the Speedmaster as NASA astronauts in Apollo 13". (Fratello; GQ)
- Omega Speedmaster Professional
- Worn by Tom Hanks as Jim Lovell. Jim Lovell wears his Speedmaster Professional at home about six and a half minutes into the film, giving a thumbs-up from a lawn chair while watching a lunar eclipse with family and fellow astronauts before the launch. Command module pilot Jack Swigert wore the same watch later in the flight, reading it in the cockpit to time the manual re-entry burn. Montres de Luxe corroborates the identification and notes that NASA later honored Omega with its Silver Snoopy Award in recognition of the Speedmaster Professional's role in timing the manual burn that helped bring the crew home. (Montres de Luxe) Hodinkee reads Lovell's watch as most likely the ref. 105.012 the real Lovell wore, while allowing the film may not match it exactly, and times the lawn-chair scene at 00:06:59 and the suit-up close-up of the watch being strapped over his flight suit at 00:29:36; props were by Steven M. Levine. (Hodinkee) Fratello's survey of the Speedmaster on screen names the three crewmen together: "Tom Hanks plays Jim Lovell, Bill Paxton plays Fred Haise and Kevin Bacon plays Jack Swigert. Of course, on their wrists the Omega Speedmaster Professional." Fratello's Robert-Jan Broer told GQ that this is "the movie that brings it together" for Speedmaster collectors, and Worn & Wound's Speedmaster survey records that "All of the astronauts trapped in the Apollo craft are wearing Speedys". (Fratello; GQ; Worn & Wound)
- Omega Speedmaster Professional
- Worn by Bill Paxton as Fred Haise. Fred Haise wears not one Speedmaster but two, double-wristed, in Hodinkee's reading of the crew scenes, and the column's crew still shows Paxton's watch beside Lovell's. The reference is not resolved. (Hodinkee) Fratello's Speedmaster survey names Paxton's Haise among the three crewmen with "the Omega Speedmaster Professional" on their wrists. - Seiko 6139
- Worn by Ed Harris as Gene Kranz. Flight director Gene Kranz wears a Seiko Speedtimer with a blue and red bezel, which Hodinkee calls the film's Pepsi-bezel Easter egg among the Mission Control Speedmasters. Hodinkee names the Speedtimer line and the bezel colours only; within Seiko's automatic chronographs that combination belongs to the 6139 family's 600x cushion cases, so the watch is recorded at family level. (Hodinkee) Watches of Espionage independently identifies the watch as a 1970s Seiko 6139, captioning a Universal Pictures frame of Harris at his console with the blue-and-red bezel, and notes that this dial variant "hadn't debuted during the film's timeline"; it asks whether the producers knew of astronaut Richard Covey's own 6139, flown on the Space Shuttle.
