The Omega Speedmaster Professional, better known as the Moonwatch, began in 1957 as a motorsport chronograph and became the watch NASA qualified for crewed spaceflight in 1965, after it was the only one of the submitted chronographs to survive the agency's qualification tests. The classic Moonwatch configuration, of which reference 311.30.42.30.01.005 is one example, puts a manual-winding chronograph calibre (the 1861 in this generation) in a 42 mm steel case under a hesalite crystal, with a black dial, small seconds, 30-minute and 12-hour recorders, and a tachymeter scale on the black bezel. Omega has kept that recipe close to the 1960s original across decades of reference and movement changes, and the Speedmaster Professional remains the only watch qualified by NASA for extravehicular activity.
