Melancholy (哀愁しんでれら, also released internationally as The Cinderella Addiction) is a 2021 Japanese theatrical thriller written and directed by Ryohei Watanabe from Rikako Akiyoshi's novel, framed as a dark inversion of the Cinderella story. Tao Tsuchiya stars as Koharu Fukuura, a child-welfare caseworker who loses everything in a single catastrophic night and accepts a marriage proposal from Daigo Izumisawa (Kei Tanaka), a wealthy widowed doctor raising an eight-year-old daughter; the film follows what happens after her fairy-tale rescue fails to deliver the ending it promises. Ryo Ishibashi plays Koharu's father, Masaaki Fukuura. Distributed by Klockworx, the film opened in Japanese theaters on 5 February 2021. (IMDb)
