Platoon is Oliver Stone's 1986 Vietnam War film, written from his own tour as an infantryman: a young volunteer, Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen), arrives in-country in 1967 and finds his platoon split between the scarred Staff Sergeant Bob Barnes (Tom Berenger) and the humane Sergeant Elias (Willem Dafoe), with Keith David, Forest Whitaker, Francesco Quinn, John C. McGinley, Kevin Dillon, Mark Moses, Richard Edson, Tony Todd and Johnny Depp in the squad. Hemdale Film Corporation produced it in the Philippines over 54 days, and Orion Pictures released it on December 19, 1986; it won four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director. Watches
- Seiko (unidentified model)
- Worn by Charlie Sheen as Chris Taylor. On night ambush in the rain about 19 minutes in, Taylor pushes back the sleeve of his poncho to read a steel watch with a white dial on a steel bracelet, and as he wipes the water from the crystal the dial signature reads Seiko for a fraction of a second. Very Good Lord, which screened the film in HD for its survey of the Vietnam-era watches in Apocalypse Now and Platoon, could not resolve the model: the 6602-8040 some spotters proposed has a date window and different markers, and the watch on screen has neither. (Very Good Lord)
- Timex Camper (vintage)
- Worn by Charlie Sheen as Chris Taylor. Taylor's field watch rides on the lapel of his olive drab fatigue shirt rather than his wrist. Lelands sold the watch itself in its 2019 Fall Classic as part of The Charlie Sheen Collection, consigned by Sheen with his signed letter of authenticity: a Timex it describes as standard military issue, "worn on the lapel" and "visible in many scenes throughout the film", still carrying Philippine jungle dirt on its original band and still set to the time of the final attack; it sold for $3,764.40. (Lelands) Very Good Lord's HD captures read the same watch as a civilian Timex Camper, with the brand name and water-resistance text printed on a dial that a genuine MIL-W-46374 issue watch leaves unsigned, and notes the anachronism: the story is set in 1967, when the Army's Benrus MIL-W-3818B was the issue watch, and Timex's own military contract only began in 1975. - Timex Camper (vintage)
- Worn by Tom Berenger as Bob Barnes. Very Good Lord puts the same 1980s Timex Camper field watch on Staff Sergeant Barnes as on Taylor, the two field watches the film foregrounds, identified from HD captures by the printed dial text that distinguishes the civilian Camper from an unsigned MIL-W-46374 mil-spec watch; the source gives no timestamp for Barnes's clearest view.
