The IWC Portugieser Chronograph compressed the oversized 1939 Portugieser dial architecture into a 40.9 mm chronograph when reference 3714 arrived in 1998: applied Arabic numerals, leaf hands, a railway minute track, and vertically stacked 30-minute and small-seconds registers, driven for the reference's entire 22-year run by the calibre 79350, IWC's reworked Valjoux 7750, behind a closed back. The reference 3716 that replaced it in February 2020 kept the dial nearly line for line while switching to the in-house 69355, a column-wheel chronograph behind a sapphire back. (Monochrome; IWC; IWC past collections) Jared Vennett's black dial in The Big Short and Frank Underwood's blue one in House of Cards both read as 3714-generation watches, but no frame resolves a sub-reference.
