Matrilineal Family (女系家族) is a two-night TV Asahi special that aired 4–5 December 2021, adapting Toyoko Yamasaki's novel of the same name, with Rie Miyazawa and Shinobu Terajima in their first collaboration. The Yajima family has run a long-established Osaka cotton wholesaler through generations of daughters taking in adopted husbands; when patriarch Kazo Yajima (Koji Yakusho, special appearance) dies, his mistress Fumino Hamada, played by Miyazawa, reveals a pregnancy that throws the inheritance his three daughters expected into chaos. Terajima plays the eldest Yajima daughter, romantically involved with dance master Yoshisaburo Umemura, played by Hideaki Ito; Asami Mizukawa plays second daughter Chizu Yajima, whose long-held resentment of her elder sister draws her into the fight over the estate. Mizuki Yamamoto and Eri Watanabe round out the ensemble. (TMDB)
