EarthBound, released in Japan as Mother 2: Gīgu no Gyakushū, is a role-playing video game written and directed by Shigesato Itoi, developed by Ape and HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the Super Famicom on August 27, 1994, reaching North America on the Super NES on June 5, 1995. The second entry in the MOTHER series after Mother and before MOTHER3, it sends the boy Ness and three friends across a satirical late-20th-century America to collect eight melodies and defeat the cosmic destroyer Giygas, and became a cult favorite whose "SMAAAASH!!" critical hits and rotary-telephone save points are quoted on the licensed watch. Casio and Nintendo's Hobonichi MOTHER Project sold this ¥23,980 Tough Solar, Multi-Band 6 GW-6900 by lottery from March 14 to 25, 2024 for the game's 30th anniversary, announced February 19, 2024 as a complete limited edition with no re-run: MOTHER red with a gold display surround, the MOTHER logo and a "POTENTIAL" label on the face, a "SMAAAASH!!" silhouette on the EL backlight, and the game's black telephone engraved on the case back.
