Mother is a role-playing video game written and directed by copywriter Shigesato Itoi, developed by Ape and published by Nintendo for the Famicom in Japan on July 27, 1989, the first entry in the MOTHER series that continued with Mother 2 and MOTHER3. Set in a small-town America of the 1980s rather than a fantasy kingdom, it follows the boy Ninten as he gathers the eight melodies needed to stop an alien invasion; a finished English localization went unreleased at the time, and the game reached the West only in 2015 as EarthBound Beginnings on the Wii U Virtual Console.
