Certina Argonaut Chronograph 8501 001
More actions
The Certina Argonaut Chronograph, reference 8501 001, is a 38 x 42 mm manual-wind chronograph Certina sold from about 1968 to 1972 in an edged cushion case large enough to read at a glance. Its Certina 29-052 caliber is a labeled Valjoux 726, the same base movement Rolex used in the pre-1988 Daytona before switching to the Zenith El Primero, driving a black "reverse panda" dial whose three white tricompax sub-registers carry unusual red accents alongside a black tachymeter scale. In Gerry Anderson's UFO (1970), Commander Ed Straker (Ed Bishop) wears the Argonaut only in the Episode 14 flashback "Confetti Check A-O.K.", set before the character took up the Certiday UFO Automatic he wears everywhere else in the series; the same reference also appears earlier in the run on the wrist of an unnamed SHADO doctor in Episode 3, "Flight Path".
