Certina is a Swiss watchmaker Adolf and Alfred Kurth founded in Grenchen in 1888, later absorbed into the Swatch Group alongside Tissot and Mido. Its defining 1959 "DS" (Double Security) concept suspended the movement inside a reinforced case, doubling shock protection and water resistance to 6 metres, a toughness the brand proved on a Himalayan ascent of Dhaulagiri before dressing Commander Ed Straker's wrist as his on-screen service watch in Gerry Anderson's UFO.
