The Certina Certiday UFO Automatic, reference 5901 173, is a 40 x 35.5 mm day-date automatic Certina introduced at the 1968 Basel Fair, built around the Certina 25-652 caliber inside a monocoque "clamshell" case with no screwed or pressed caseback, opened only through the crystal. It was Commander Ed Straker's on-screen "service watch" throughout Gerry Anderson's UFO (1970), worn in all 26 episodes but one, and the actual prop survives: its caseback carries a personal inscription from producers Gerry and Sylvia Anderson and Reg Hill, presented to star Ed Bishop when filming wrapped, and it remains with his family, on loan to the isoshado.org fan archive since his 2005 death. The identification rests on this single specialist site's comparison of production stills against the surviving watch, rather than on a studio prop record. (VintageCERTINAs)
