The black ceramic J12 is the original form of Chanel's ceramic sports watch: artistic director Jacques Helleu designed it as the watch he could not find to wear, named it after the J-Class racing yachts of the 1930s and launched it in 2000 at 38 mm in high-gloss black ceramic, until then an industrial material; the white version followed in 2003. The black line has since spread from the 41 mm diamond-dial chronograph H2419, which has its own page as Chanel J12, to 2009's J12 Noir Intense with 724 baguettes cut from black ceramic, and Arnaud Chastaingt's 2019 redesign moved it to the COSC-certified Kenissi Calibre 12.1 with a 70-hour reserve.
