Hamilton Wilshire
More actions
The Hamilton Wilshire is a rectangular Art Deco dress watch introduced in 1939 and produced through 1947, notable among collectors for its flexible, swivel-mounted lugs, which earned it the nickname "driver's watch." Hamilton cased the manual-wind caliber 980 or 982 in 14-karat solid or rose ("coral") gold, offered with applied-gold-numeral, two-tone gilt Roman-numeral, or coral-themed dials; the 1939 catalog pitched it as "thin as a wafer, smart as tomorrow" and priced it from $52.50. (Hamilton Chronicles) Hamilton's own historical film-credit page places a Wilshire on Russell Crowe's John Nash in A Beautiful Mind (2001) and on Hal Holbrook's Congressman Doyle in The Majestic (2001), without specifying which dial execution in either case.
