Oris Big Crown Pointer Date
Photo: Oris (representative Big Crown Pointer Date, calibre 403)
The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date descends from the pilot's watch Oris introduced in 1938, and both halves of the name are functional. The crown is oversized because a pilot in the 1930s wore heavy gloves in an unheated cockpit and had to reset the watch against a radio time signal without removing them. The date is shown not in a window but by a fourth, usually red-tipped, hand sweeping a 1-to-31 track printed around the dial's outer edge, which is easier to read at a glance and gives the dial its distinctive crowded rim. Oris revived the design in the 1990s and has kept it in production since, in steel and bronze, across several sizes and dial colours. (Oris)
