The Rolex Datejust, ref. 1603, is a 36 mm steel Oyster-cased Datejust distinguished from its fluted-bezel sibling ref. 1601 by an engine-turned (coin-edge) steel bezel, part of the "four-digit" Datejust family Rolex produced from 1959 into the late 1970s. Early examples ran the calibre 1565, an 18,000 vph automatic with a Breguet overcoil and instantaneous date-change cam, before the line moved to the refined calibre 1570 in the mid-1960s; many surviving dials from this run show the domed, three-dimensional "pie-pan" profile that preceded Rolex's later flat dials. Jackroad's costume-loan archive credits this reference to Kenichi Endo for Path of the Dragons, playing shipping-company patriarch Genpei Kirishima. (BeckerTime)
