Rolex Explorer

The Rolex Explorer traces directly to the 1953 first ascent of Everest, released after Rolex outfitted John Hunt's expedition with Oyster Perpetuals and built a dedicated model around what the climb demanded: legibility and toughness over anything decorative. The format has held for seven decades: a black dial with oversized luminous 3, 6 and 9 Arabic numerals, Mercedes hands, no date window, and a steel Oyster bracelet. The case stayed at 36 mm for most of the line's life before a 39 mm version arrived alongside it in 2010. References run from the early 6610 through the long-lived five-digit 14270 era to the modern 124270; Rolex Explorer 1016 is the line's most famous vintage execution. (Monochrome, Rescapement)
