Rolex Explorer 1016

The Rolex Explorer 1016 is the reference that carried the Explorer from the early 1960s to 1989, the longest run of any Explorer and one of the longest of any Rolex. It kept the format the line had settled on: a 36 mm steel Oyster case, no date, and a black dial with luminous batons and oversized 3, 6 and 9 numerals, chosen for legibility in poor light. Early examples use the calibre 1560; later ones the 1570, which gained hacking seconds by the early 1970s. Dials changed quietly across the run, glossy black with gilt printing giving way to matte black with white text from the late 1960s, and those variations now drive much of its collector interest.
