The Rolex Explorer II began in 1971 as a caver's watch: reference 1655 paired a fixed engraved 24-hour bezel with a broad orange hand so that someone underground for days could tell morning from night. That first hand only tracked the main time, and the 16550 of 1985 made it independently settable on calibre 3085, turning the watch into a proper second-time-zone tool and introducing the white "polar" dial the line is now known for. The 16570 ran that formula for twenty-two years before the 42 mm 216570 and 226570 enlarged it. (Hodinkee) Pictured is a polar 16570.
