The Rolex Oyster Perpetual 6298 is a 36 mm steel "semi-bubbleback" reference Rolex built through the mid-to-late 1950s, its convex, domed caseback swelling to clear the automatic caliber A296's rotor, a stopgap solution before Rolex flattened the Oyster case in later calibers. It arrived a few years after the 1953 debut of the Explorer and, on examples with a honeycomb-textured dial, applied dagger indices and Arabic 3-6-9 numerals, wears as one of the closest non-Explorer siblings to that reference, without carrying the name itself. (Bob's Watches) Dials also appeared in plainer baton-index configurations under the "Oyster Perpetual" and "Explorer-style" naming Rolex had not yet standardized in this transitional era of its sports-watch line.
