The Rolex Submariner 16610 is the steel Submariner Date Rolex built from 1988 to 2010, the reference that carried the aluminium-bezel diver through its last two decades before the ceramic Rolex Submariner 116610LN replaced it. A 40 mm Oyster case rated to 300 metres holds the automatic calibre 3135, with a Breguet-overcoil hairspring and a quickset date read under the cyclops, behind a black aluminium bezel insert and a dial whose lume crossed from tritium to LumiNova across the run. It is the Submariner most people picture: over-built, unglamorous, and common enough on a wrist that on screen it reads as competence rather than luxury. (Bob's Watches)
