The Rolex Submariner 1680 is the first Submariner to carry a date, made from 1969 to 1979, which meant it was also the first with the Cyclops magnifier bubbled over the window at three, and, because it kept an acrylic crystal, the only dated Submariner ever fitted with one. A 40 mm Oyster case and the calibre 1575, the no-date 1570 with a date wheel added, sit under a matte black dial. From 1969 to about 1975 Rolex printed SUBMARINER in red on that dial; those early "Red Sub" examples are among the most collected vintage Rolexes, which is exactly what a director gets when they put one on a leading man's wrist.
