Hello Kitty (properly Kitty White) is a cartoon character created by Japanese design company Sanrio, designed by Yuko Shimizu and first sold in March 1975 on a small vinyl coin purse, a year after her 1974 creation. Rather than originating in any book, film, or television work, she was conceived from the start as a licensable design for merchandise, and has since become one of the world's best-selling character properties, appearing on tens of thousands of consumer products and eventually her own animated television specials, starting with 1987's Hello Kitty's Furry Tale Theater.
