The Patek Philippe Nautilus is the steel luxury sports watch Patek Philippe introduced in 1976 as reference 3700, drawn by Gérald Genta and shaped after the hinged porthole of a transatlantic liner. A rounded-octagonal bezel clamps onto a two-part case roughly 42 mm wide yet only about 7.6 mm thick, water-resistant to 120 m, with side ears in place of conventional lugs, a horizontally grooved dial, and an integrated bracelet that tapers straight out of the case. Inside sat calibre 28-255 C, an ultra-thin automatic built on the Jaeger-LeCoultre 920. Sold at gold-watch money in stainless steel, it languished for years before the design became one of the defining templates of the modern luxury sports watch. (Monochrome, Revolution)
