Popeye the Sailor Man is a comic-strip character created by Elzie Crisler Segar, first appearing on January 17, 1929 in Segar's King Features daily Thimble Theatre, a strip then in its tenth year whose star, Olive Oyl, became the one-eyed sailor's long-suffering sweetheart. Popeye took over the strip within months, gained a supporting cast including Wimpy, Swee'Pea and the brute Bluto (the Brutus of UNDONE's watches), and from 1933 starred in Max Fleischer's Paramount cartoon shorts, which Famous Studios continued through 1957 and which, with the strip, carried the character into a century of licensed merchandise.
