Infernal Affairs II

Andrew Lau and Alan Mak's prequel to Infernal Affairs, running from 1991 to the handover in 1997. The assassination of the triad patriarch Kwun leaves Hong Kong's gangs on the edge of a war; Kwun's son Ngai Wing-hau takes the family business and sets about consolidating it, Inspector Wong puts a young officer, Yan, inside the triad, and the gangster Sam plants his own man, Ming, inside the police. Worn by Francis Ng as Ngai Wing-hau. Montres de Luxe identifies Ngai's watch as a Rolex Day-Date in yellow gold, and treats the sighting as one more instance of a pattern it argues is near-universal in Hong Kong cinema, where a Rolex is close to standard issue for a character of standing. No reference accompanies the identification. On Ngai the gold President does particular work: he inherits a triad at his father's death and spends the film insisting that what he now runs is a company, and the Day-Date, built only in gold or platinum and carrying the bracelet that heads of state made the "President", is the watch that argument needs.
