Wolfgang Petersen's outbreak thriller for Warner Bros. A US Army virologist investigating a lethal hemorrhagic fever in Zaire finds that the virus has reached a small California town in a newly airborne form, while military command weighs destroying the town to contain it. Dustin Hoffman leads as Colonel Sam Daniels with Rene Russo, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey and Cuba Gooding Jr. as the Army medical team, Patrick Dempsey as the courier who carries the virus home, and Donald Sutherland as the general pressing for the strike. Rolex Submariner

Worn by Kevin Spacey as Lt. Col. Casey Schuler. Schuler is Daniels's colleague on the Army's field team, and the sighting puts a steel Rolex Submariner on Spacey's wrist. Steel is as far as the identification goes: the line has run in steel from the 1953 original through the modern Cerachrom generation, and no bezel insert, crown-guard profile or dial line is resolved to narrow it to a reference. It is at least the right instinct for the character, since a screw-down Oyster case and a graduated timing bezel are working equipment for someone moving between biocontainment suits, helicopters and field autopsies rather than an ornament worn over a cuff.
