The IWC Ingenieur 666 introduced IWC's antimagnetic line in 1955, built around a soft-iron inner case that shields the movement to 80,000 A/m without thickening the watch, a construction credited to technical director Albert Pellaton and marketed toward engineers and lab workers who could not wear an ordinary automatic near motors and instruments. (Monochrome Watches) The 36.5 mm steel case, 100 metres water-resistant, holds a plain dauphine-handed dial signed "International Watch Co. Schaffhausen" over "Ingenieur," and reference 666 was sold as the no-date 666A, running Pellaton's automatic caliber 852, or the date-equipped 666AD on caliber 8521; both use his pawl-winding system, which converts rotor motion into a full revolution of wind rather than the partial, one-directional catch of earlier automatic designs. (Time and Tide) IWC would return to the Ingenieur name repeatedly, most famously in Gérald Genta's integrated-bracelet 1976 redesign, but the 666 remains the line's antimagnetic-tool-watch origin rather than the sport-luxury direction the name later took.
